Asepsis and Infection Control

Request a Quote

NAT101
ASEPSIS AND HAND WASHING
Video

Microbes can be both beneficial and hazardous to humans.  Since they are microscopic and not visible to the eye, they are easy to ignore.  Unfortunately, results of microbial presence such as infections and fever are all too common.  The skills involved in medical asepsis are aimed at controlling the growth and spread of microbes.  25 minutes.

NAT103
BLOODBORNE INFECTIONS  AND UNIVERSAL   PRECAUTIONS
Video
The two most significant diseases with which a health care worker is likely to come into contact are Hepatitis B and AIDS.  Both are deadly.  Standards for the workplace are designed to protect you and reduce your risk of contracting a bloodborne disease on the job.  An infection control practitioner will present information to help you, the assistant, better protect yourself and your patients.  25 minutes.

NAT105
INFECTION CONTROL
Video

The assistant will very likely be required to help care for someone with a communicable disease.  The patient may be in “isolation” because of an infectious condition that could spread to workers and other patients.  Use of protective barrier equipment and basic knowledge of infection control measures are important for everyone’s safety.  Everyone is responsible to help stop the spread of infection.  25 minutes.

Communication and Interpersonal Interaction

NAT111
BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS
Video
The assistant will at times need to communicate and interact with patients who exhibit behaviors that are difficult to deal with.  This lesson will acquaint the learner with some typical forms of behavior problems and review some basic and general measures that can be used to better work with patients in a therapeutic manner.  25 minutes.

NAT113
COMPONENTS OF  COMMUNICATION
Video

Effective communication skills are expected of the assistant for job success.  The nursing assistant will need an understanding of verbal and nonverbal communication, barriers to effectiveness and what makes for good listening skills. Touch as a nonverbal skill will be frequently used by the assistant.  25 minutes.

NAT115
JOB SEEKING AND KEEPING  SKILLS
Video

The assistant will likely find many job openings in a variety of settings.  Getting a job still does take more than just being able to do some skills.  The nursing assistant should be aware of what employers are looking for.  25 minutes.

NAT117
OBSERVATIONS:  HOW AND WHAT TO REPORT
Video

Reporting information and observations involves communicating clearly, accurately and in a timely manner.  Any change in patient status is reported whenever noted.   How and what is reported is important to safe patient care.  25 minutes.

NAT119
RECORDING WRITTEN  INFORMATION
Video
The assistant is required to document observation and care given on each client.  The patient record is a legal document admissible in a court of law and the assistant needs to use it accordingly.  25 minutes.

NAT121
ROLE AND FUNCTION ON THE JOB
Video

The nursing assistant is one member of the health care team who provides services in numerous locations within a community.  The nursing assistant under direction usually of the RN or LPN works in long term care, acute care and home health care agencies. Ethics involves doing “what is right”:  a higher standard of behavior than what is legal and will influence decision making about what to do and what not to do.  25 minutes.

NAT123
SAFE INTERVENTION WITH  AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR
Video

The assistant at times will need to deal with behaviors that are aggressive in nature.  It is important to continue to work in a therapeutic and helpful manner and to respond in a way that protects the assistant yet is not abusive to the patient.  25 minutes.

NAT125
STAFF COMMUNICATION/INTERACTION
Video

As a member of the health care team, the assistant is a link like all other members are.  Reporting of observations as well as receiving information is essential for patient safety.  It is a requirement of the job to be able to use various devices such as call belts, the telephone and “alert” devices for people who wander.  25 minutes.

NAT127
THERAPEUTIC INTERACTION
Video

The relationship between nurse and patient should be a therapeutic one, a relationship that helps the patient.  This type of relationship is difficult to achieve, but the assistant will be expected to establish a therapeutic relationship with clients receiving care.  Various factors are present in the client as well as healthcare worker backgrounds that influence this interaction.  25 minutes.

NAT129
TIME MANAGEMENT/WORK ORGANIZATION
Video

The assistant will find that one vital quality for success on the job is the ability to use time wisely in order to get the required work done in the time allowed.  Time limits and working under time constraints is a job reality.  25 minutes.

NAT131
TOUCH AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION
Video

Nursing is a high touch occupation.  One’s sense of touch is a valuable source of information about the world around us as well as a sense the assistant uses to “observe” during care.  25 minutes.

Dementia and Related Disorders

NAT141
ENVIRONMENT AND  ACTIVITIES
Video
The clients with dementia may look to us like strange people.  Rather, this is a person who, for some reason, is living in a world that is strange and very real to the confused client.  Recreation is a vital part of occupying the client’s day.  It certainly helps to support remaining abilities and enables pleasure.  In addition, it adds to the quality of life as well as slowing down the inevitable changes occurring.  25 minutes.

NAT143
FAMILY SUPPORT AND  COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Video

Alzheimer’s can afflict younger as well as older persons.  Share for this time the reactions of a young family who lives with Jerry.  Be aware of the resources available for the family as they cope with Jerry.  25 minutes.

NAT145
MEALTIME INTERVENTIONS
Video

Mealtime is an important event for everyone.  It is a time to take in nourishment and nutrients.  For the client with dementia, this can be a stressful and confusing time.  The assistant will most likely help the client and must be able to deal with difficult mealtime behaviors.   25 minutes.

NAT147
NURSING ASSISTANT CAREGIVER
Video
Caregivers for clients with dementia face stressors that are unique.  The very nature of the situation puts the burden of numerous challenges on the person who provides care.  There are approaches and resources that can lessen the effects on the caregiver in any setting.  25 minutes.

NAT149
WHAT IS DEMENTIA?
Video

Dementia is the term used to refer to changes (usually losses of thinking and memory).  Sixty percent of nonreversible dementias are caused by Alzheimer’s disease.  Understanding causes and symptoms is important to understanding the disease.   Supporting remaining ability and providing for quality of life are part of the care giver’s role.  25 minutes.

NAT151
WORKING WITH  BEHAVIORAL CHALLENGES
Video

The client with dementia presents numerous behaviors that require flexible and sometimes creative solutions on the part of the caregiver.  Behavior challenges may include such actions as wandering, agitation and catastrophic reactions that are unexpected.  25 minutes.

Environmental Safety for the
Assistant and the Client

NAT161
ALTERNATIVES TO RESTRAINTS
Video

Rules on restraints are intended to improve the quality of life for residents.  Restraints can be equipment, locked areas or some medications that limit or restrict one’s freedoms.  They do have purpose but only as a last resort for a small number of people who require these for their safety.  There are alternatives available to allow for freedom, to help position people, and to help maintain their safety.  These alternatives include planned activities, electronic wander guards, rearranging furniture and creative ways to keep residents restricted as little as possible.  25 minutes.

NAT163
BED MAKING
Video
Wrinkles, objects and tight or loose spots can cause foot problems.  A bed that is not properly made can cause problems and discomfort for the patient.  Principles of asepsis and body mechanics must be applied for the safety of everyone.  A good deal of the assistant’s time is spent making beds.  Careful attention must be given to time, energy and supplies. 25 minutes.

NAT165
BODY MECHANICS
Video

Body mechanics involve safe and efficient use of one’s body in moving, lifting, sitting, standing and lying down.  Good body alignment involves good posture for workers and patients alike.  Using body mechanics can help prevent serious health problems.  25 minutes.

NAT167
ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY
Video

One’s safety and security are threatened by various factors in the environment that can be hazardous.  All staff are constantly on guard for any risk that could cause harm. The assistant will need to be especially aware of environmental safety, including fire prevention and what actions to take in case of a fire.  Falls are also a threat to worker and patient alike.  25 minutes.

NAT169
OCCUPIED BED MAKING
Video

On occasion the assistant will need to change anywhere from one piece of linen to an entire bed with a patient in the bed.  25 minutes.

Ethical and Legal Responsibilities

NAT171
CLIENT RIGHTS
Video

The rights of an individual are not given up when one becomes elderly, ill or disabled.  All health care workers must be familiar with resident rights.  Each resident has the right to be treated with dignity, respect and full recognition of one’s individuality.  25 minutes.

NAT173
LAWS AND REGULATIONS  FOR THE JOB
Video

The nursing assistant’s job is regulated by federal and state laws.  The nursing assistant will be expected to follow policies which will vary with each facility.  These polices protect the rights of those who receive health care services and monitor care through on-site surveys.  25 minutes.

NAT175
LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ASSISTANT
Video

The assistant, like all health care workers, must be critically aware of how behavior can influence the care given. Workers’ actions can benefit or even unintentionally hurt the people assistants will be caring for.  25 minutes.

NAT177
PERSONAL  SAFETY MEASURES
Video

Many things can threaten one’s personal safety and even life itself.  Safety needs are priority needs for everyone — patient and worker alike.  The assistant needs to be able to quickly identify situations that threaten life and at least take basic steps when needed.  25 minutes.

NAT179
RESTRAINING DEVICES
Video

Restraints are devices used to protect, limit movement and help position.  People have a right to freedom of movement, and cannot be confined against their will.  Health care workers must realize there is a fine line between a client’s need to be safe and protected and the need to be free to move around.  The assistant uses these restraining devices under supervision of the professional staff.   25 minutes.

NAT181
USING EQUIPMENT IN THE PATIENT UNIT
Video

The equipment used for a client who is ill or needs assistance is fairly standard in hospitals and nursing homes.  It is also made available for the client’s home, if needed.  The equipment is important in helping patients meet the activities of daily living.  25 minutes.

Exercise and Activity

NAT191
ASSISTING WITH  AMBULATION
Video
The assistant will be moving, lifting and transferring clients who have varying degrees of impairment. It is essential to move and transfer in a way that maximizes one’s strength and minimizes fatigue, muscle strain and injury.  Good body mechanics are important for the health care worker.  25 minutes.

NAT193
EXERCISE AND ACTIVITY
Video

The assistant must be able to lift, move and transfer patients safely.   Many things influence how much assistance will be needed as well as what devices will be used.  25 minutes.

NAT195
POSITIONING
Video
Proper positioning in bed is vital not only for comfort but also for prevention of complications.  Each position is carefully planned and carried out to promote good body alignment.  Sometimes this is all the exercise a patient gets.  25 minutes.

NAT197
PROBLEMS AS A RESULT OF IMMOBILITY
Video

Providing for mobility, exercise, and positioning are major components in the assistant’s job.  When movement is not possible or limited to allow the body to heal, complications can and do occur.  The assistant not only helps prevent complications by effective use of skills but also prompt reporting of any change in a patient’s condition.  25 minutes.

NAT199
RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISE
Video
Joint motion is often taken for granted unless there is pain, such as from arthritis or surgery or from disability such as paralysis.  Joints allow for body movement where two or more bones join.  When the client is unable to move adequately, this loss of exercise can cause various complications from atrophy (or wasting away) to deformity, such as a contracture.  25 minutes.

NAT201
TRANSFER
Video

Transfers from bed to wheelchair and toilet are commonly done throughout a day.  Clients may do this independently with proper positioning of wheelchair or use of grab bars.  Sliding boards are a device enabling a move from the bed to a clean surface.  Transfers can be assisted by one or two people.  25 minutes.

NAT203
WORKING WITH  PROSTHETICS
Video

Devices to assist clients adapt are frequently used.  These can include prostheses, or false limbs, false body parts as well as other devices such as braces and splints.  25 minutes.

Applying various types of heat and cold treatments requires at least a basic knowledge of safety precautions.  In addition, even if these skills are not part of the duties an assistant will perform, there is still the need to report observations to the professional staff.  25 minutes.

NAT309
PERSONAL HYGIENE
Video

The perineal area includes the genital and anal region.  Nails are usually cleaned and clipped by the assistant only if the patient is not diabetic.  Oral hygiene often involves care of false teeth or dentures.  These areas are cleaned routinely by the assistant whenever the resident is unable to do this.  25 minutes.

NAT311
SHOWER/TUB/SPONGE BATHS—PRINCIPLES  OF BATHING
Video

Much time is spent helping meet the hygiene needs of patients.  Cleanliness is essential to healthy skin.  The assistant must be able to help bathe a patient in a variety of ways, depending upon the client’s needs.  25 minutes.

MAT323
COMMON DISABILITIES  AND DISEASE
Video
Disabilities can result from a variety of causes and have different levels of severity.  There are numerous chronic and long-term disabilities.  The assistant will find that a major focus is to help restore the individual to the best level possible, or at least to maintain and slow down the changes.  The heart and lungs are frequently involved in chronically disabling conditions.  25 minutes.

NAT325
DEVELOPMENTAL  DISABILITIES
Video

Disability or changes in how one functions can be caused by accidents/injuries, aging and certain illnesses.  Emotional stress, mental illness and depression can also interfere with one’s ability to function normally at times.

Developmental disabilities (physical or mental) are a result of some difficulty during the person’s development, usually appearing before ages 18-22, and are likely to continue.  These cause substantial limitations in the individual’s function in the areas of:

NAT327
DIABETES AND  PARKINSON’S DISEASE
Video
Frequently an elderly individual may have one or more chronic, disabling conditions.  Diabetes involves an imbalance in the hormone insulin and affects younger and older persons.  Parkinson’s disease is caused by an imbalance of a chemical in the brain which causes changes in how the client is able to use muscles for movement.  Both of these conditions will require alertness on the part of the nursing assistant to watch for and report changes.
25 minutes.

NAT329
HEARING AND VISION IMPAIRMENT
Video
The assistant often will care for persons with hearing as well as vision problems.  Hearing-impaired persons may use devices such as hearing aids or special telephone adapters.  These patients also will benefit if the assistant is able to use some measures which will make for more effective communications.  The five senses usually become less efficient as aging continues.  Vision changes have great impact on how one communicates.  25 minutes.

NAT331
SPEECH IMPAIRMENT
Video

The assistant will often need to communicate with patients who are unable to speak.  There are various reasons for this problem.  The assistant must be able to use special communication skills and equipment on occasion to help this person progress in speech rehabilitation.  25 minutes.

NAT333
WHAT IS REHABILITATION?
Video

Activities of daily living (ADLs) are those things we do daily in order to remain independent and to function in society.  Individuals with a disability may need very little, if any, assistance or anywhere on up to total assistance.  Rehabilitation aims to restore the client to fullest physical, mental and social function that is attainable for that individual.  The rehabilitation team works with each client to promote independence.  The assistant is often the caregiver who spends the most time with this client.

The elderly adapt to change and loss, which is a common task in this stage of development.  Some adults will likely need to be cared for in a facility due to their illness.  This option, if permanent, can be a drastic and final reality.  Though not always traumatic, such a change can bring about great loss of control and freedom for the adult.  25 minutes.

Understanding the Client and Assistant as a Person

NAT341
ASSISTING TO MEET  SPIRITUAL NEEDS
Video
Spiritual dimensions of care can be easily overlooked by health care workers.  Providing for spiritual needs may greatly enhance the patient’s ability to deal successfully with the major stresses caused by illness and disability.  This video is to acquaint the assistant with the importance of spirituality for many patients.  25 minutes.

NAT343
BASIC DIFFERENCES

PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES  WITH AGE
Video

Physically, our bodies grow and continue to change throughout life gradually.  Emotional and social development continue in phases/stages throughout life as well.  Each stage has certain tasks or work to accomplish.  In late adult stages of development, two main tasks are faced.  In addition, the elder adult may face numerous changes that occur in this period of life.  25 minutes.

UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOR
Video

The health care worker interacts with clients who present differing backgrounds and needs.  The nursing assistant is challenged not only to carry out physical skills safely and effectively but also to interact with each patient in a way that promotes well-being.  This requires some basic understanding by the assistant of human behavior.  25 minutes.

WAYS OF COPING WITH STRESS
Video

Stress is part of life; it is unavoidable.  Whether for a paying job or as a family member who is responsible for the care of another, care giving is at times a stressful activity.  Care givers need to be able to cope with stress as well as control the response to stressful situations.  25 minutes.

Vital Signs and Functions

ALTERATIONS IN  VITAL FUNCTIONS
Video

The human body normally maintains a constant temperature within a few degrees of 98.6° Fahrenheit (37° Celsius).  At times, though, the temperature may be elevated.  Other changes occur in circulatory and respiratory systems such as fainting and shock. Distress in breathing requires use of oxygen and various exercises, such as coughing and deep breathing.  Often the assistant is an observer as well as care giver when these problems arise.  25 minutes.

ASSISTING WITH THE  DYING PATIENT
Video

The assistant will likely be involved in the care of a terminally ill patient, either in home care or a facility setting.  Each assistant may, like many other health care workers, be unsure of personal feelings about death.  Still, the health care worker must be able to help meet physical, social,  emotional  and spiritual needs of the dying patient — even perhaps the patient’s family members. 25 members.

BLOOD PRESSURE
Video

The assistant may be expected to take blood pressure readings as part of the job requirements.  The assistant is introduced to this skill and is expected to know how to use the equipment safely.  25 minutes.

COMFORT NEEDS
Video
Pain often accompanies the patient at any age and is whatever the person believes it to be.  The assistant should know that pain is a protective warning mechanism as well as very distressing to the one experiencing it.  The assistant will care for many patients who are experiencing various degrees and types of pain.  25 minutes.

PULSE AND RESPIRATION
Video

Taking one’s pulse and respiration is part of measuring vital signs.  The skill involves 100% accuracy in locating one’s pulse and in counting/determining the correct numbers.  Many factors influence both pulse and respiration.  Measuring one’s height and weight is another commonly performed skill for the assistant, and this also needs to be done 100% accurately.    25 minutes.

NAT371
TAKING A TEMPERATURE
Video

Cardinal or vital signs are measurements of life signs — temperature, pulse and respiration.  The assistant must be able with 100% accuracy to measure, record and report temperature, pulse and respirations.  Height and weight are signs of overall nutritional status and will be obtained upon admission and routinely, usually by the assistant.  25 minutes.
