This program is designed to educate those who provide care for the elderly about the normal changes that occur with aging.  Aging processes affecting the brain, heart and excretory system are outlined; characteristics of change in hair and skin, the primary senses, and muscles and bones are described; and glaucoma, cataracts, and osteoporosis are discussed.  Recommendations for exercise and nutrition are presented, as are methods for coping with diminished capacities and loss.  Sexual functioning among the elderly is also addressed.  41 minutes.

This program is designed to provide an introduction to foot care for older persons.  Nurses and paraprofessionals working with older persons will receive an overview of the structure and function of the feet, a review of terminology which describes landmarks for documentation and terms associated with foot movement, and a brief description of certain foot disorders.  11 minutes.

NURSING ASSESSMENT OF THE LOWER EXTREMITIES

This program focuses on the techniques used in a nursing assessment of normal and abnormal variations of: gait and balance, range of motion and muscle strength, circulation, sensation, proprioception, and the skin and toenails.  Pathological conditions such as venostasis, decreased circulation, and diseases of the toenails are reviewed.  The video demonstrates a “hands-on” approach to physical assessment as well as providing guidelines for observation and history taking with the older adult.  23 minutes.

Foot care by nurses can prevent and/or reduce the discomfort and decreased mobility that can accompany foot problems.  Procedures involved in providing proper foot care such as trimming toenails, buffing corns and calluses, and massaging the skin are presented.  The program stresses that providing foot care can help in the detection of skin, circulatory, and neuromuscular problems resulting in a prompt referral to a primary care specialist.  23 minutes.

1. Teaching your patient a routine for daily foot care which includes inspection the feet, care of the nails, hygiene, and exercise.

3. Explaining to your patient the importance of appropriate footwear, including socks and stockings.  Describe the recommended procedures for purchasing shoes.
