S630
Physical Fitness Assessment Program

DESCRIPTION
Most students who participate in sports do not really know their
own physical abilities for the types of sports for which they are
engaged. A couple of years ago a basketball player from the
University of Maryland, had a sudden heart attack while engaged in a
basketball game. Obviously this student did not know he had a heart
condition and should not have been engaged in such an extreme exercise.
The Physical Fitness Assessment Program S630, is designed to enable
students to physically make a wide variety of measurements on their own
bodies and to enable them to asses their physical fitness for sports that
require considerable exertion. The program serves to screen
students and to have them further examined by a physician before
participating in sports that can potentially result in injury or serious
illness. The physiological measurements made are similar to those
that would be made in a hospital or doctors office.
The program is divided so as
to evaluate various parts of the body. Twenty-one different types of
measurements are made covering muscles, bones, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure,
body fat and stress level. Each unit is designed to stand alone, so
that groups of two or three students can perform a specific type of
measurement. Not everybody in the class needs to be doing the same
activity at the same time. This makes the program more economical to
operate. The program includes a wide variety of laboratory
instruments designed for teaching and learning as well as a variety of
multi-media. Two laboratory manuals, one for each module is
provided. The entire program includes computer based software so that
students can printout the various measurements being made. This
enables them to compare their own physical measurements with others in
their group.
The S630 Physical Fitness
Assessment Program is divided into two modules. Module One contains
10 units and Module Two containing 11 units of instruction.
