SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This course stresses the principles and applications of semiconductor laser diodes as
used in the compact disk and in fiber-optic communications. It is important to
familiarize the student with basic atomic physics, laser diode operation, and the
characteristics of laser light.
In this study, various optical lenses are introduced to vary the diameter of the beam.
The beam is transmitted both through space and through a fiber-optic cable.
Various methods of beam modulation, including sub-carriers, are introduced.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an extension of Optoelectronics and Fiber Optics. Emphasis
is placed on the semiconductor laser diode rather than a variety of different kinds of
lasers. The course includes materials and experimentation with a variety of lenses and
also treats beam-splitters, mirrors and diffraction gratings.
