Markings and Islands

Video
Markings and islands have separate purposes.  Markings convey certain regulations, warnings and other information without diverting a driver’s attention from the roadway.  Islands are areas between traffic lanes that control vehicle movement or provide pedestrian refuge.  This Video covers the design and application of both devices.  The information in this tape is based on the U.S. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.  19 minutes.

HBT103
Special Use Traffic Controls

Video
This program covers special use traffic control devices.  These devices address potentially hazardous traffic conditions.  These include hazard identification or speed beacons, lane use control signals, pedestrian signals, high occupancy vehicle facilities, changeable message signs, movable concrete barriers, and a variety of other miscellaneous devices.  17 minutes.

HBT105
Traffic Control Signals at Intersections

Video

Traffic control signals are power-operated devices that direct traffic alternately at intersections.  They assign the right of way to each intersecting street in an efficient manner.  This program describes basically how engineers determine if a signal is needed, how signal controller phasing works, and how signal timing works.  Signal controller phasing for four-legged intersections, five-legged intersections, and four-legged intersections with a left-turn lane are discussed.  18 minutes.

Traffic Controls for Schools,  Railroad Crossings AND  Bicycle Facilities

Video
This program covers traffic controls under three traffic control conditions requiring extra safety considerations:  school areas, railroad crossings and bicycle facilities.  Each is a unique situation for drivers and other highway users that is presented in detail in this video.  24 minutes.

Traffic Sign Inspection and Maintenance

Video

Inspection and maintenance of traffic signs are crucial to insuring a high level of public safety.  Poorly maintained signs can affect safety traffic operations and can cause severe liability problems.  This video covers sign maintenance facilities, field equipment and materials.  It discusses how to measure whether signs are performing at the proper level and describes a sign inventory system and an inspection program.  21 minutes.

Traffic Sign Placement and Location

Video

The placement and location of traffic signs are discussed in this program.  Three specific roadways:  urban, rural and freeways are included in this presentation.  22 minutes.

Worldwide Traffic Sign Systems Overview

Video
The purpose of this video is to familiarize viewers with the three roadway sign systems — United States, European and Latin American — in use around the world.  The information presented in the video makes general comparisons between sign systems and is useful for traffic engineering personnel.  26 minutes.
